It is also possible to manipulate the cells so they can be reprogrammed back into
embryonic stem cells, which can be then injected into the patient. The
reprogrammed cells have the potential to be used in treating many medical
conditions, but scientists do not know whether the altered cells will cause adverse
effects in humans.
A person can receive stem cell therapy in a hospital or a clinic. During the course of
the treatment, the stem cells are manipulated to become a certain type of cell, such
as a blood cell or nerve cell. They are then injected into the patient to help repair
damaged tissue.
